“ The Chinese characters for “crisis” are 危机 - a combination of 危 (danger) and 机 (opportunity). It suggests that hidden within every crisis is an opportunity to rise above the challenge and emerge stronger and better. Therein lies the beauty of the Chinese language, where 5,000-year-old wisdom is encapsulated in and expressed through every character. Such is the case with Spicy Shack, a food business that came about as a result of the COVID-19 crisis the owner found himself mired in. The landscaping business he had been in for over two decades came to an abrupt end due to the lockdowns. But instead of accepting his fate and languishing in misery, he took the bull by the horns and started a new venture. With no prior experience in the food business, it was a gamble he had to take. And that’s how Spicy Shack came into being. A three-year-old business (as of 2024), located along the popular and bustling food street, Jalan Lazat 1 in Happy Garden, KL, that has since garnered good press and an equally strong following. It was my first time checking it out. I ordered: 1) Prawn mee (RM9.00) Verdict: Thick, dark and intense broth that’s totally different from all the prawn mee (same dish but called Hokkien mee in Penang) I’ve ever eaten. Just a tad on the salty side. The unique broth itself is worth the experience. 2) ABC or Ais Kacang (RM5.00) Verdict: This one, unfortunately, is out. Ice shavings were far from fine. Flavour lacked depth and balance. Still a long way to go to match the standard of PJ Old Town Jessie’s ABC (see my review on Jessie’s Special ABC). 3) Chee Cheong Fun with prawn sauce (RM5.00) Verdict: Nice, but very salty. Would recommend asking for the prawn sauce to be served on the side - unless you’ve got a high salt tolerance. Other popular items to try: assam laksa, fruit rojak, cendol, ginseng peach gum dessert, and the large tiger prawns prawn mee (weekends only). Atmosphere: Small space (it is a shack, after all) with limited seating. Tables are placed closely together. Dining under a zinc sheet roof on hot days can feel a bit sauna-like. Service level: The boss and three assistants whip up orders in reasonably quick succession. Boss works quietly behind the scenes. Assistants take and serve orders with no issues. Would I go back? Yes but not for the ABC. Business hours: Sun & Mon: 9am-4pm Tue-Sat: 9am-8pm Closed: Only during Chinese New Year Note: Last visited December 2024. ”
